WRC confirmed as market surveillance authority over workplace AI under AI Act

The Workplace Relations Commission has set out its role as a Market Surveillance Authority under the EU AI Act for employment-related AI — recruitment, screening, work allocation, performance monitoring and emotion-inference systems, several of which sit in the Act's high-risk or prohibited categories. Employers deploying HR or people-analytics AI in Ireland now have a named regulator with inspection powers on top of the Data Protection Commission and WRC adjudication itself, so a pre-deployment check should cover equality, data protection and employment-law risk, not just GDPR. The WRC notes several high-risk obligations remain on a delayed timeline, so this is a designation of authority now with fuller enforcement detail still to come.

27 state AGs urge Congress: federal AI law must not preempt state authority

A bipartisan coalition of 27 state attorneys general, including Minnesota's Keith Ellison, wrote congressional leaders calling for mandatory federal safety testing, incident reporting, and international coordination on frontier AI — but insisting any federal statute must expressly preserve state AI laws and give state AGs enforcement authority. For organisations tracking the federal preemption push (the August 2026 executive order and pending bills), this is the clearest sign yet that Congress faces a united 27-state bloc resisting a preemption-only deal, which keeps the current patchwork of state AI laws live as a compliance baseline regardless of what Washington does next.
